An Introduction to The Salvation Army's National Disaster Training Program
The development of a National Disaster Training Program (NDTP) began in June 2002 when The Salvation Army received a three year grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. for the development and initial implementation of a U.S. training program.
The NDTP is a standardized training curriculum available to any Salvation Army disaster responder, including officers, staff and local volunteers, as well as available to other faith-based organizations upon request to the respective Territorial Emergency Disaster Services office. The goal of the NDTP is to develop the disaster responder's skills and knowledge, better preparing and equipping them to respond to disasters in a prompt, efficient and effective manner while embodying the mission of The Salvation Army.
The NDTP curriculum is comprehensive, encompassing numerous different topics categorized into introductory, intermediate and advanced level training courses. Each course has been uniquely designed based upon adult learning principles, incorporating interactive exercises which challenge participants to apply the information obtained to disaster relief scenarios. A package of material has been developed for each course which includes a participant course guide, an instructor course guide, and audio-visual materials. Training courses and materials are available to divisions, as well as to other faith-based organizations, through their respective territorial office.
Crisis Response Training
The Salvation Army also has many employees and volunteers trained to respond to the emotional and spiritual needs of survivors of disasters and traumatic events. These crisis response teams are available to assist emergency services personnel and communities in times of crisis. The primary method of crisis response training for these teams is through the Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) curriculum of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). The Salvation Army also has ICISF approved instructors to teach these courses. To find out more information about crisis response training and ICISF go to www.icisf.org. CISM crisis response training is also offered by the American Association of Christian Counselors referenced at http://www.aacc.net/.
