The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff Will Be Louder Than Ever

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit will officially kick-off the 2009 Red Kettle Campaign with a festive ceremony at Campus Martius Park in Detroit on Friday, Nov. 20. The ceremony marks the fourth year that TSA has combined the start of its hundred-year-old red kettle tradition with the annual lighting of the city of Detroit’s holiday tree.

The Salvation Army and Royal Park Hotel Help Build Our Community - One Gingerbread Brick at a Time

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit and the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester are teaming up to give people a chance to start a new holiday tradition and at the same time, help their community by sponsoring a piece of Rochester’s largest gingerbread house, which will be on display in the lobby of the hotel from Nov. 23 through Jan. 1.

The Salvation Army Gives the Gift of Christmas

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is currently accepting applications for Christmas assistance from residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Applications will be accepted now through Dec. 11. “Because the demand for our services is up 60 percent, it is important to get your application in as early as possible,” said Major John Turner, general secretary for The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. “We expect even larger volumes this year and we want to be able to accommodate everyone.”

The Ring is On! The Salvation Army Launches $7.8 Million Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit will launch its annual Red Kettle Campaign throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties on Friday, Nov. 13 in an effort to raise $7.8 million to sustain its annual services. Through Dec. 24, bell ringers will collect donations at more than 300 red kettles located at retailers and businesses such as Kroger, WalMart, Macy’s, Sam’s Club, JCPenney and Walgreens among others. Contributions also can be made by calling 877-SAL-MICH or given online at www.salmich.org until Jan. 31, 2009.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is celebrating Veteran’s Day by “Doing the WRITE Thing” to support our troops overseas. On Nov. 11, The Salvation Army will be encouraging citizens to send a kind word to the men and women defending our country. By visiting www.salmich.org, community members can submit a personal message online to The Salvation Army that they will send to service men and women currently serving in Iraq.

Ring a Virtual Bell with The Salvation Army’s Online Red Kettle

The Salvation Army is pumping up its Online Red Kettle with the introduction of a new Facebook application in an effort to engage all audiences in its annual Red Kettle Campaign. The Online Red Kettle allows people to host their own fundraiser for The Salvation Army by making donations online. “With an increased need of 60 percent, we wanted to pull out all the stops to make it as easy as possible for people of all ages to donate to the Red Kettle Campaign,” said Major John Turner, general secretary for The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. “The Facebook application is another way to tell your friends and family that you are supporting The Salvation Army.”

Get Your Bells On For a Good Cause

Each year, 300 red kettles are placed throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. In hopes of filling all 50,000 shifts prior to the holiday rush, The Salvation Army is starting recruitment earlier than previous years. The Red Kettle fundraising campaign relies heavily on volunteer efforts to reach its $7.8 million goal. The funds from the Red Kettle Campaign are used to fund programs and services offered to people in need year-round.

The Salvation Army On-Site at Detroit Aid Event

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team are on site providing relief to thousands of people waiting in line for the city of Detroit’s financial aid event at Cobo Hall. The Salvation Army’s EDS team is handing out water and snacks from three EDS trucks dispatched to the corners of Civic Center Drive and Atwater; Washington Boulevard in front of Cobo Hall; and Washington and Larned.

Detroit Red Wings Treat Local Kids to VIP Experience at HockeyFest

Kids from The Salvation Army were treated to a very special visit from Red Wings player Dan Cleary during HockeyFest August 29 at Joe Louis Arena. Ten children from The Salvation Army’s STRIVE Youth Hockey program in Pontiac, Royal Oak and Warren received a special demonstration from Cleary and demonstrated the new hockey skills they’ve learned as well.
