THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDES EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE DURING DEADLY COMMUTER TRAIN CRASH

National Capital Area Command Disaster Response Team Serves over 200 Meals and 400 Drinks since Monday Evening to Emergency Personnel

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 24, 2009 — The National Capital Area Command Disaster Response Team was on high alert since the evening of Monday, June 22nd until approximately 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning in response to a deadly commuter train accident in the District of Columbia.  One Metro train slammed into the back of another on the Red Line at the height of the evening rush hour, killing nine and injuring 80 others in the deadliest accident in Metrorail’s 33-year history.

The Salvation Army provided the first responders with sandwiches, chips, healthy snacks, cold drinks, water and coffee.  During The Salvation Army’s response effort, the Disaster Response Unit was positioned immediately across the street from the only access to the train and was directly in the path of those responding to the incident as they walked to and from the crash scene.

With the assistance of twelve volunteers, The Salvation Army served over 200 meals and over 400 drinks to the emergency responders since the evening of Monday, June 22nd.

As of Wednesday, June 24th all Salvation Army disaster response efforts have been concluded.
