FEED THE KIDS SERVED A RECORD 116,686 MEALS THIS SUMMER!

Wauwatosa, WI (August 30, 2012) “Thank you for the lunches you gave me and my Auntie these past two months.  It was a blessing as this was our only meal,” wrote one youth, who gave the note to a Salvation Army driver during the last days of Feed the Kids. The Salvation Army’s Feed the Kids meal program, now in its 23rd year, served a record 116,686 lunches to area children this summer.

Retired Green Bay Packer LeRoy Butler made a surprise visit and served the last of those meals on Friday, August 24.  “I used to be one of those kids. I grew up poor in a Jacksonville, Florida projects, I know about living in poverty and understand the importance of giving back.  The Salvation Army does great work,” said Butler, inventor of the Lambeau Leap.

“The economy continues to impact many families’ ability to meet basic needs, even food; 40% of children in Milwaukee are living in poverty.  The Feed the Kids program is a major contributor in continuing nutritional care throughout the summer and meeting the hunger needs of children in the Greater Milwaukee area,” said Major Roger Ross, Salvation Army Milwaukee County Commander.

The Salvation Army operated the Feed the Kids program for 10 weeks from June 19 to August 24 in collaboration with Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee Public School District, West Allis/West Milwaukee School District, Milwaukee Center for Independence, Boys & Girls Clubs, Social Development Commission and Heart Love Place.
