8th GRADE STUDENTS DONATE
FOOD & FUNDS TO THE SALVATION ARMY
Kansas City-area 8th grade students collect food for the Branson Corps!
Branson MO (April 30, 2012) During their class trip a group of 8th grade students from Midland Adventist Academy in Shawnee Kansas plan to give back to the Branson community by helping The Salvation Army. The students plan to stop by the Branson Crops on Wednesday May 1st at 1:30 p.m. to donate the nonperishable food and financial donations they collected during a recent bake sale fundraiser and food drive. The food and funds will go directly toward helping the Branson Corps recover from the February 29th tornado.
"The class felt like it would be cool to help someone during their class trip. They wanted to give something back, not just soak it in for themselves," Greg Hallock, Midland Adventist Academy 7th & 8th grade teacher said.
The Leap Day tornado damaged the Branson Corps' roof, shattered several large windows, and destroyed a passenger van. Also, much of the food in the Corps food pantry was either damaged or had to be thrown out due to the power outage. The estimated damage now totals approximately $170,000.
"I have friends who have struggled in hard times," Elida Rada an eighth grade student said. "I think helping with the food pantry is a really good thing. You never know--you might be helping people who helped your friends when they needed it."
In addition to nearly 100 pounds of nonperishable food, the students also collected dozens of reusable bags for the food pantry to use as well.
"A lot of people think a class trip is just about having fun," Logan Seibold, an eighth grade student. "But we're a Christian school and we should practice being like Jesus and remember to be a blessing to others and not just ourselves."
The students also plan to sort and pack the food they collected as well as help with general ongoing clean-up efforts.

Nonperishable food items that are still needed include: breakfast cereal, canned meats, pasta & pasta sauces, peanut butter, baby food, canned vegetables, rice, fruit juice and boxed dinners.
