Since 1890, The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to thousands of Ozarks residents. Today, more than 120 years later, The Salvation Army remains committed to "Doing the Most Good" for the most people in His name without discrimination.  

Currently, there exists an urgent need in this community for more transitional & emergency housing for families and homeless individuals. With the community's support, The Salvation Army is prepared to meet this need and provide for this population that includes women, children, and an  increasing number of veterans.   

The Salvation Army's proposed housing & social services complex will consist of the following:

New Start Housing:

Families in this transitional housing program are often just months away from complete self-sufficiency & independent living. Formerly homeless families are selected for the New Start Housing program through recommendation by social service providers and typically remain in the program for 18 to 24 months, which allows them sufficient time to take the final steps necessary to secure their own permanent housing.  

Social service case managers work directly with these families to help them obtain vocational and continuing education training, permanent housing, life-skills classes, child care and any additional social services they need to help them successfully transition back into the community.  The New Start Housing program, which currently operates at an off-site apartment complex, will be relocated to a newly constructed residential-style facility located on The Salvation Army's main campus. Once complete, at least seven formerly homeless families will be able to call the New Start Housing facility their home.     

Adult Housing Center:

This 41 unit apartment-style building will consist of 20 transitional housing units and 20 permanent supportive housing units for single adults, including homeless veterans. One unit will be reserved for the on-site housing manager. Supportive services provided to all residents include thorough social service case management, life-skills training, and assistance obtaining permanent housing. Additionally, social service case managers will work directly with residents to help them obtain vocational and continuing education training, employment assistance and any additional social services they require to help them regain self-sufficiency. However, residents in the transitional housing units will be required to participate more in-depth levels of case management and supportive services.

It is anticipated that more than 90% of the individuals residing at the Adult Housing Center will have entered the program from an emergency shelter or other transitional housing program where they have demonstrated a substantial degree of stability that's necessary and appropriate for this program's more independent living environment.

Emergency Shelter Services Center: 

Providing care and aid for those living on the fringes of society is at the heart of The Salvation Army's mission. Individuals who seek help through The Salvation Army programs always receive a holistic approach. This means that The Salvation Army provides each & every individual with as much physical, emotional and spiritual support as possible so they can make the necessary changes in order to transform their life.

With this in mind, The Salvation Army plans to respond directly to the need identified in the "Homeless in Springfield and Greene County, A Status Report 2010" by providing a year-round 56 bed emergency shelter that will include approximately 28 beds for men, 10 beds for women, and 15 family beds located in three separate rooms.  Social services case management and referrals to other community service providers will be provided to these individuals to assist them in gaining the stability & self-sufficiency that is necessary to transition into more permanent housing.

The Salvation Army staff will work hand-in-hand with other community groups & many collaborative partners to ensure that each client is provided with the services and supportive safety-net needed to give them the opportunity to make necessary life changes.
